I probably should mention that, now that I'm older and wiser, I
probably wouldn't have implemented that hack in that way anymore.
I probably should have cast the arguments properly and then used
snprintf() instead of sprintf().
<shrug> C++ iostreams are sort of nice, but if I'm doing something
complex or time-critical, I prefer to use C's stdio instead.
