I've got a temperature/fan monitor unit in my PC, and I can confirm this
behavior. Not only goes it apply to the CPU, but the graphics card as well.
I have a temperature probe on the CPU heatsink; another is on the graphics
coproc heatsink. If I start pounding on the processor (e.g., screen-saver,
kernel compile), my CPU temperature can rise by more then ten degrees
Fahrenheit! Likewise, anything that does a lot of graphics work (e.g., action
games, screen-savers) can cause a several degree jump in graphics coproc
temperature.
When I still ran MS-Windows, I noticed that the CPU tended to run hotter,
while the graphics card tended to run cooler, except in 3D games, where it
really heated up. This matches what I know of Windoze: Overall system
performance is poor, but graphics drivers are more optimized.
