I'm having a problem with an Adaptec 2940UW and several kernels in
RH7.0.

Well, I looked at the messages, and the fact that you are trying to
talk to a CDRW, and I groaned... I'm seeing a similar problem with
Red Hat 6.1, but with the latest-n-greatest 2.4.1 bits. The Adaptec
SCSI driver was extensively re-written in 2.4.1 or thereabouts, BTW.
See the Linux Kernel mailing list archive at:
http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/
for the ongoing discussion(s). My groan is over the fact that I just
bought a Plextor CDRW drive (the latest-n-greatest, 12/10/32 or
some such), *BUT* it has rev 1.0 firmware on it, and I get device
timeouts during boot when the drive is plugged in and powered up. It
is _noticed_ by the driver (and the BIOS) at its proper ID, but when
the driver then tries to poke it with a SCSI INQ command, it refuses
to respond. To quote R2D2, "How rude!!".

I might add that WNT 4.0 SP5 cannot boot with the drive online, probably
for much the same reason. And, that presents a nasty dilemma inasmuch
as the updated firmware is supposed to be installed by running a
Windoze *.exe file downloadable off of Plextor's web site. Any ideas??
