Hi All,

I was hoping to generate some discussion on
Micro$ofts new pricing/licensing for XP and XP Office.
I saw in Network World that if you register for there
new XP Office suite before Oct. it will be $285.00 per
user PER YEAR. And if you "buy" (rent) it after Oct.
it will be $585.00 per user PER YEAR! I believe if
someone is going to rob me that should be required to
produce a gun.

My company has begun work to impliment a Linux
Desktop. Most of our "core buisness apps" run on one
of two SCO Unix servers. Up until a couple of years
ago most of our office personel used "dumb terminals".
We are using terminal emulation on the Windoze boxes
to access the key apps to do our buisness. We are
currently testing both SUSE 7 and RedHat 7 as
potential desktops. We are also testing Sun's Star
Office on both Linux And Windows desktops. We have no
problem telneting into our Main SCO box but are
currently trying to work out "How to" set up a remote
Xclient from Linux to our 2nd SCO server.

[side note] I'd be interested in hearing from Linux
support companies in the MASS. area(not posted to the
list but to my personal email) who HAVE set up remote
Xclients from linux to SCO servers. What would it take
$ and time to show us how to do this?

My main point is that Micro$oft is going to force
buisness people (who simply want to do there core
buisness and keep the bottom line in the black) to
look at alternatives to having Bill rob them every
year. If you look at what is on the horizon for viable
desktops, Linux stand poised to take a shot!

We (the Linux Community) will have a great
opportunity because Bill will make the "bean Counters"
ask "What other choices to we have?" Let's talk up and
show people (by installing Linux desktops) the Other
choice.

When talking to other Computer professinals I
bring up the New M$ licensing scheme and then when
they respond in shock I speak about Linux.

Talk it up!
