Pie-sized tar balls wash up on Hollywood beach

HOLLYWOOD -- It could have been worse. It could have been turtle season.

But tar balls apparently aren't much welcome during tourist season,
either.

Tar balls, some as big as pie pans, washed up on Hollywood beach again
Thursday, peeving tourists and business owners. It was the second time
in two days that the substance washed ashore with the morning tide.

Thursday's tar balls came ashore in two spots 3 miles apart. Coast Guard
officials hope to determine the source by next week.

There were no reports of damage to wildlife, but some people stepped in
the tar while walking the beaches Thursday, said Steve Krivdo, marine
science technician with the Coast Guard.
