Just getting into this line (boy, leave the list alone for a night, and miss a
lot), but I'll give my thoughts on this:
Remember, unlike Windows, Unix is composed of many small programs doing one
thing well, chained together. FTP is not in and of itself a bad protocol,
it's the security aspects that are not there (mainly because FTP was
originally designed before the concerns about security were there). However,
like all good Unix programs, it can be chained with other programs. Some
alternatives I have seen:
1. FTP over SSL. Use the SSL for authentication (SSL3, with client/server
authentication). http://freshmeat.net/projects/linux-ftpd-ssl/
2. SCP (runs extremely well, talk to Yloden about getting an SSH client for
Windows / Mac).
3. FTP over SSH - use SSH for the base connection, then run FTP through it.
4. FTP-BSD, which adds PAM support: http://freshmeat.net/projects/ftpd-bsd/
For one listing of FTP solutions: http://freshmeat.net/browse/679/
