Thanks for the suggestions and discouragement so far...
Here's a little more detail on what I'm thinking of.


I have two machines on a LAN.  Let's call them m1 and m2 (damn I'm creative).
m1 has a modem and I use it to connect to the net.  Both machines run X windows.
I have this really cool toy called etherape that graphically displays network
activity by IP address (among other things if you want them).

I'd like to run this app on m2 but have it monitor ppp0 on m1.

Another approach to solving this would be to run the app on m1 and tell it that
its display is m2:0.0 (however that would be spelled) but I don't know how to
do that either.

I liked some of the suggestions about using a remote sound card though.  Then
I could use m2's sound card for network alarms while playing stuff on m1.
