I agree 100% with this. We, the Linux community, do a lot of complaining
about Microsoft putting out insecure products. However, maybe we should
start looking at the Linux distributions. Maybe we as a community can
pressure companies like RedHat, Caldera, Mandrakesoft, etc. to put out a
more secure distribution. I realize that these companies aren't
responsible for maintaining a majority of the software that they bundle,
but it is their distribution. They can at least be held accountable for
securing the configurations that are installed by default. SUID
binaries, inetd, etc. Not to mention, they alter enough of the software
that they bundle to start with, so why can't they secure it while
they're at it?

That may have been the reason that the LUG, and LUG's in general were
started, but I think that we have taken on more of an advocates role. We
are the sysadmins, the programers, and the sales people for companies,
and we do a great deal of peddling Linux to management. Because of that,
we are looked at as the representatives. And as the representatives, I
think that we have a responsibility to push secure systems to the world.
Of course, drinking beer and talking about Linux with other educated
people sounds good, too ;-)

Just my $0.00012,
Kenny
