If your mouse is a ps/2 mouse, try changing the device to /dev/psaux
and turn OFF gpm.  That program is notorious for interfering with X.
There are various hacks which you can use to get it to work, if this
helps.  If so, and you want to use gpm, read the gpm manpage -- it
should tell you how to fix this.
