Alot of the times they dont want to look ignorant. I used to work at a place
where everything HAD to be run on Windows NT and Cold Fusion, even though
*NIX and PHP wouldve whooped its ass. We tried telling him there were better
and cheaper solutions out there, but they were insistant on running Windows
and Cold Fusion, simply because it was "What they knew". It took me so long
to switch over the mailservers to Sendmail running on FreeBSD, and the only
reason why they let me, was because I coded a PHP page that gave sendmail
statistics and made sure it was running alright. Needless to say the company
is going down hill fast because NT and Cold Fusion just cant keep up with
the demands of the users (even though they just invested in 20 1U's with 700
mhz Pentium 3's in them...). People just hate admitting they are ignorant to
some stuff, and would rather go the less attractive route, than just listen
to what people have to say.
By the way, one of the best quotes I heard from that place was "My pager
didnt go off all day... I was starting to get worried". Yes, anytime a
system would fail, they would get paged. They were so used to getting paged
multiple times a day, that when one day everything worked perfectly, they
were worried something horrible was wrong. Not a good way to run a business.
