As some of you might know, one of the most
anticipated games of the year came out a few weeks ago, Tribes 2. This is an
important day for Linux gaming, because the Linux port came out only one week
after the release of the Windows client (plus bundled in with the Windows client
is a Linux Tribes server). I was reading the story on Slashdot when the news
first came out, and I ran across this thread:
http://slashdot.org/articles/01/04/12/025228.shtml (Search
for the word Bad_CRC).
What this person says is very important to the
Linux gaming community... time to put up or shut up. For years the Linux gaming
community has been crying up and down about how video games aren't being
released for Linux. Having Quake 3 run on Linux was a pretty big milestone, but
as far as Linux _sales_ are concerned, it bombed. This could be our last chance
for video game manufacturers to take us seriously.
Some of you also might know that Loki (www.lokigames.com, Linux game porters) are
having an awesome special to LUGs right now. The basic rundown is that we can
save 50% on all their titles if we order 10 or more copies as a LUG. I was going
to buy Tribes 2 anyway, but I figured I would ask this list if this is something
people are interested in. Not only can we get some awesome titles for cheap
(cheaper than Windows ports!), but more importantly we can help
out.
Its unfortunate that video game companies just dont
hire a few Linux programmers to port their games and officially release/support
them, but as far as they are concerned, Linux is a huge gamble. Companies dont
like the idea of wasting time and effort on a product, and until they start
seeing some solid numbers, they arent going to start supporting Linux any time
soon. We should be lucky to have a company like Loki porting some major titles
over to Linux, and I think its time to show them how much we appriciate
them.
If this is something people ARE interested in, then
I'll get a list started. Any feedback is welcome.
Thanks.
