It's dying... Compaq is going to continue producing the Alpha chip through the
EV79, but will officially migrate their systems (Tru64, VMS, and NSK) to the
Intel 64 bit Itanium chip over the next couple of years.  Compaq is also sending
several hundred Alpha chip designers to Intel over the next few years...
