I'm not surprised the security professionals hold him in low regard,
however I am rather used to things appearing (and reappearing) in the
Windows/PeeCee world claiming to be "new inventions". That's sort of
the nature of the beast, Windows being such a huge and basically
isolated culture.
The Windows/PeeCee world is, to 1st approximation, "the idiot masses",
and I view Gibson's tools as geared toward those masses. Proper credit,
etc, aside, my first impression of his tools are that they have done
more good than harm (since idiot masses can use them). Please correct
me if I am wrong (I've only used a couple of them). Sometimes if a
tool has less features it is actually more useful (easy there, now,
emacs users!)
Anyway, I thought his ddos story was an interesting read. Sometimes a
personal account is useful in visualizing the events that take place
better. I kind of liked his "thrills-n-chills" style, although I can
imagine it would turn some folks off.
Later,
Karl
