Actually, this, above almost all else, is why I love multi-processor
motherboards. Say you have a dual-500 Celeron motherboard; most people
would readily grant that a) it's damn cheap, and b) less powerful than
(say) a 1 GHz Athlon motherboard.
BUT.
While CPU #1 is off recompiling your kernel, using 100% CPU, CPU #2 is
happily servicing your XMMS, your mouseclicks, your window movement, etc.
While it's true that the aggregate system is slower than the Athlon, in
real-world use, it APPEARS to be significantly faster. And, well, in some
cases, appearances *are* everything.
So, seriously, if anyone out there is thinking of a new motherboard, might
I suggest (for Linux uses, of course) a multi-processor board? Even a
fairly old one might give you better perceived performance than the spiffy
new kid on the block; I know it works great for me!
