My environment is mixed, actually mostly Winblows. At any rate. I
don't get to use Linux as much as I'd sometimes like. As often as not
it's to rebuild a machine to test a new installation or product.
That's exactly what I'm doing now. Removing an old Mandrake and putting
on a RH 7.1. However the machine in question has some things I'd like
to save. For example the contents of /etc. I used Samba to copy them
but there are many "open" files making this a poor idea. I know TAR is
the proper tool (well, I think anyway). So, I've the following
questions about backups.
Is TAR the proper tool? What options or parameters to backup the entire
/etc tree?
I know, from uncompressing files, that the z option is for zipped
files. How can I make my backup, or tarball, unzippable under Windows?
My CD burner is on a Windows machine and I'd prefer to put the backup on
CD uncompressed to allow easier access or browsing of the contents.
What about open files under TAR (or whatever)? In most cases I know the
file is open (say a log file) and don't really care, I just want a
snapshot. How are open files handled and are there any issues (not
regarding file contents, regarding grabbing an image, I'm aware of the
dangers of taking a snapshot of open files)?
Thank you, GGK
