The 18th of this month is the Dartmouth annual computer distribution, this
means a thousand or so freshmen line up at a tent and pick up a computer,
software and literature. Unlike past years when this event was almost
solely Macintosh this year 80 percent will be picking up Dell machines.
Some of us will be standing at the tent and hand out as many Red-Hat Cd's
as we can along with a package of information regarding security and
services at Dartmouth. We have some local resources but I'd like to steer
them toward this list as a primary source of help as people here seem more
helpful, knowledgeable and available, a young incoming freshmen with a
computer preloaded with Windows is can be a hard sale until he gets the
basics working and a chance to see what Linux is like. Anyway I guess I
wanted to note that if you get a stupid question please keep in mind it
could be some first time freshmen that's already being courted by Microsoft
sales sharks and is possibly writing as a last resort.
Thanks!
