In a word, no. :)

But I think your correct in the assertion that setting your IP 
locally wouldn't have the affect you'd expect.  Since the CM has it's 
own "address" on the RF side which isn't related to ethernet or tcp/ip.

The CM acts as a bridge, taking the RF stream off the cable side only 
if it's destined for it and translating it to ethernet to bridge to 
the network on the other side.  So, if you want to set your IP 
locally on a system, you'll also have to affect the configuration of 
the CM as well.
