Yep, it can get downright annoying at times. I'm sure there are all kinds of little things like that which various members of the list may have created for their own use (and to suit their own taste), which they could share with you. I, for example, greatly prefer: alias ls='ls -aF' to display various symbols to denote executable, directory, symlink, etc., on my files, including the dotted files. Your taste/mileage may vary.
