Perhaps we're looking at this backwards. Instead of trying to eliminate all possible weapons, we should instead level the field by making sure a certain large percentage of the passengers are armed and able to defend themselves and others. For example, those who don't carry-on thier own firearms can be provided with a 'courtesy' gun airline for the duration of the flight.
