I didn't understand how bad aliases were until I stopped using RedHat. I don't know if they still do it, but they used to alias rm, ls, cat, and a bunch of other things. I just figured "OK, different *NIX, different command action". Well, that caused some probles on other systems. So now that I don't use RH, I no longer have a single alias, and I find that I can pewdict the outcome of a script much easier.
