In a word: yes. Currently, we're doing full installs for every new raid-only system we send out; about 2 a month. The complete install takes at least two 8 hour days onto a clean 3-drive array. We don't have the full installation on a single drive yet, but if it could be used as a master drive, then that is what we'd do. The raid array will eventually be the only drive that the new system sees and boots from. Would dd do the trick of piling all of a single-drive's data onto a 3-disk array and have the ability to boot from it? Kyle ps.. the previously posted link about os cloning using dd and netcat will undoubtedly help.
