so apologies if I'm missing the point here)
I once installed win98 on a machine that had previously
been an NT-only box and, indeed, win98 basically refused
to have anything to do with the NTFS partitions.
I changed one partition over to FAT32 and win98
grudgingly agreed to live there and ignore the others.
Shortly after that I wiped win98 and installed Linux
which happily allowed access to the FAT32 partition
and the NTFS partitions along with its native ext2
partition. So, it seems that one clunky alternative
might be to use the best (rather than the suggested
lowest-common-denominator) partition/filesystem layout
and then boot Linux to transfer data between the various
worlds if your need to do so were rare enough...
