At last! I'm going to dump the remaining Microsoft stuff on the machine which Janet uses. We're going to replace her machine. Special arrangements have been made with Santa for a Thinkpad T22. When it gets here it will start life with Linux.
At the risk of biting off too much to chew, I would also like to use this opportunity to become acquainted with Debian. (At least I'll be able to wipe out the machine and start installations over again with minimal pain, since the machine won't contain any files which matter.) But I confess to uncertainty about how to begin. I'd really rather pay a few bucks to get as much stuff pre-built on a CD. And I have a Debian CD - but it's older, one I bought from maddog at Hoss Traders. I've also looked at Libranet. I know that updating with apt-get is great, so in principle I guess I could start anywhere and pull later packages down from the 'Net. But more on the CD and less from the 'Net is better. (I'm a captive of the Wilton Telephone Company, and that means 24Kbits/sec on a good day.) The machine needs to end up with things like KDE 2.2, though. I'm not expecting to find that on any CD. What would you guys start with? (Has anyone in the group actually loaded Debian on a T22?(*)) How about getting KDE on CD, is that possible? Is anyone else contemplating doing such a thing? Thanks -Bill & Santa (*) It has been done; I've found several articles. But from FLOPPIES... ***************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the text 'unsubscribe gnhlug' in the message body. *****************************************************************
