Rebuild your kernel with:
CONFIG_NETLINK=y
CONFIG_RTNETLINK=y
CONFIG_NETLINK_DEV=y
I'm not sure all three are necessary, but I know NETLINK and RTNETLINK
are. They can also be build as modules, if you wish. These make the ip
command work, and the ifup script is happy.
