I think you are right. At least, you can't check the ECC function, because
you would have to change bits AFTER the memory controller, ie, in the memory
matrix itself. I wouldn't think software alone could do this. You probably
need a standalone [S|D|R]IMM tester.

ECC RAM can detect and correct ONE bit error per word (I think it's a word)
and it can DETECT BUT NOT CORRECT multiple bit errors per word.
