FAST ?!?!   FAST did you say ?   Ray Cote thought the problem might be heat 
related.  HEAT !?!!?  HEAT did you say ?


Let me sum this up succinctly.



The smoke should have been a clue.

Disk drives are apparently like computers in general; they run on smoke.
When the smoke gets out, they quit working.

This was a brand new Samsung 30 gigger.  I've never seen infant mortality 
with so much enthusiasm.  One of the chips on the drive was not glowing but 
it was hot enough to smoke.

Tomorrow I buy a CD burner.  Let's hope that's just a metaphor.
