I have no idea who Eckel is, nor do I much care. However, I've seen
executable line noise written in a number of languages. Perl, IMO,
happens to be one of the most readable languages I've seen. But,
I've also seen it written like line noise. That property is more a
result of the programmer than the language.
As far as it being the wrong tool for every job? I'm amazed someone
would be so narrow minded to make a statement like that. Have they
performed every job in every way possible to know this for certain?
And even if it is the wrong tool for every job, that doesn't
necessarilly mean that Python is the right one either.
I like to adapt old phrases, so here's perl twist on one for Mr. Eckel :
Perl is absolutely the worst tool there is for the job....
Except for all the rest.
