You may have read my posting on how I fared trying to get Linux running
acceptably on my Compaq 1700XL laptop. Ultimately I wasn't able to get Linux
installed and running to my satisfaction. In the meantime I noticed that VMware
had introduced a new version of their software and I decided to upgrade to that
version and try it on my laptop. The long and short of it was that I was able to
install Mandrake 8.1 with very little effort. My first attempt was thwarted by
my failing to perform the correct sequence of actions to get my X server running
properly. Additionally, I setup my virtual disk too small and so I repeated the
installation with a larger virtual disk (2 gigs). After reading the X server
installation description more carefully, I was able to run X at 1024x768
resolution. The other detail is that VMware supports several different ethernet
"virtual adaptors". On my laptop the ethernet bridging option didn't work with
my wireless PCMCIA adaptor but the NAT support worked perfectly. I can now run
my Linux system as a guest on my Windows 2k laptop.

Wirth's Law: Software gets slower faster than Hardware gets faster!

"On the side of the software box, in the 'System Requirements' section, it
said 'Requires Windows 95 or better'. So I installed Linux." - Anonymous
