I brought a 10baseT-equipped laptop home from work and
tried to connect it to my household 10base2 (thinwire)
Enet with a NetGear EN104 4-port hub. (The EN104 has
a BNC connector on the back for 10base2 and four RJ45
connectors up front for the 10baseT) I have it all working
but it's suffering terrible packet loss due (apparently)
to collisions. The laptop is eventually able to negotiate
its IP addr with my DHCP server, after which I can ping
other boxes both inside and outside my house from the
laptop, though the packet loss is from approx %5 to %35.
And the whole time the collision-indicator LED appears
to blink more or less in unison with the Rx LED. So,
it seems clear that I have all the IP plumbing rigged
correctly and that it's the Enet layer that's scrogged.
Why does this arrangement suck like this?
