Zing! I guess I had that coming. I was once accused of being a little Nazi System Administrator for a wild flamewar I started about root passwords. Of course, this was at a company that had NO root passwords set on the majority of their Unix machines. And they would treat them like PCs and reflexively reboot them at the first sign of a small problem that could easily be fixed. Two of my favorite incidents was the developer that did an 'rm /vmunix' on an SGI workstation to free up 3MB on the root filesystem. (Gee, what's this big junk file doing here?) And the guy who insisted on having root on his Solaris workstation who wanted to free up some space on /var. (Gee, what's all this junk in /var/mail.) Turns out /var/mail was mounted root r/w on all workstations (don't get me started on that one!). The problem was the way I worded my initial edict. ;-) It was a classic conversation. Even if I wasn't such a pakrat, I still would have saved it for posterity. On the topic of Red Hat, I wasn't trying to be too critical. All one has to do is look at my Mass. vehicle registration plates to know how I feel about the company (they read "REDHAT"). I do know at least one sysadmin at Red Hat that is excellent. And if any of the others that I knew still work there, then I'ld say that they have a pretty good IT staff. I do know that they generally get very good input for each release and try to meet those needs. Sometimes, things don't quite turn out as hoped, but I've been generally quite impressed with the distribution. -- -Paul Iadonisi Senior System Administrator Red Hat Certified Engineer / Local Linux Lobbyist Ever see a penguin fly? -- Try Linux.
