Paul,
Whenever I have a problem like this, I first boot into single user mode, run fsck 
manually 
(remember to make sure root is mounted RO when running fsck on it) , then if 
everything is ok, I 
boot up in multi-user mode with limited resources (usually run level 2). Then if there 
are no 
problems, switch to run level 3. 
Then I run startx manually. 
Things could be as simple as a deleted symlink in the rc5.d directory. 
I use SuSE 7.3, which is a b it different from Red Hat. 
You can also switch display managers.
