  Yah, I did all that.  xterm and gnome-terminal make no difference that I
see (other than xterm defaults to black-on-white text and gnome-terminal
defaults to white-on-black).

  With "vi", "bc", or "emacs", the program appears to get ^Z on input.

  Sorta.  It turns what is normally invalid input into a hung process.  But
the original problem is that I do not have job control, and I want it.

  Job control for nothing!  I want my [CTRL]+[Z]!  ;-)
