I think I know (and agree with) the point you're
trying to make but your statement seems to reflect
wishful thinking rather than reality - there is
very little correlation between obviousness and
syntactic/semantic correctness in C.  As evidence
I submit the Obfusated C contest, along with
most of the code I've ever had to maintain in my
career.  (Indeed, much of the latter should have
been submitted to the former!)  And those who've
worked with me will be familiar with the HCTPHEW?
acronym usually found on my whiteboard along with
the most recent coding crimes I've been obliged
to decipher - it stands for:

  How Can This Possibly Have Ever Worked?

and came into being precisely because the compiler
*is* able to hold its nose and translate all kinds
of abominations that would gag most humans.
