Hey all,
A dear friend of mine's father was, in his prime a very famous pianist.
Sadly, he now lives in a nursing home in Concord. His wife, who lives in
Bradford and cares for him has been frustrated by the project of trying to
catlog his extensive, voluminous collection of musical scores. These
scores, especially with his, or his teacher's markings/fingerings in them
are quite valuable as a collection.
She has asked my assistance in cataloging them.
So far, her son has begun putting about 3000 records on to an excel
spreadsheet.
Reflexively, I told her that the way to do this is to:
1) get an inexpensive used laptop.
2) throw linux on it, apache, php, mysql
3) build a catalog database in mysql and use php so that you can have a
web-based interface...
My questions are these:
I've just purchased a dell latitude for the job. We'll buy an external
CDRW so that we can:
1) install linux from a CD
2) do backups to CD
So.. since I've leapt without looking, can someone confirm that Linux will
*run* on a dell latitude and... which distro (please, no distro wars)
would y'all recommend I use for a project like this...
Lastly..
Anyone interested in donating some time in helping me get this project
going?
I expect she'll hire highschool or gradeschool students to do the data
input once the front end to the database is built.
ANy comments, etc.. appreciated.
cheers,
J.
