Darn Tootin'. Remember using Windows on SUN boxes before any MS Win existed ? Thats when I first became addicted to huge screens and Unixen. Long live Linux. Keeping in mind that I'm a fan of SUN systems I submit the following thought: It seems that SUN maybe the first major UNIXen company whose business will be significantly curtailed by the emergence of Linux. The cost of keeping Solaris competitive against both Microsofts OS's and Linux will be prohibitive for them. I think that will eventually make Solaris untenable. My advice to SUN is to port all of Solaris's added value features to Linux, (should take about a week or two :-) ), and then convert all their Solaris development teams to Linux development. The business model would have to change of course, but they could make their Solaris added value features Non-open model and charge for that added value while losing the added expense of developing and supporting their own OS. They could also charge for a Linux tuned to their hardware and for providing support for it. If they don't I think that in time, perhaps a long time, Linux could either push solaris off of SUN hardware or just make the market demand for SUN hardware dimish to non-existance. Especially since companies like IBM are providing Linux based hardware alternatives to Sun's systems. Of course my advice and $3.00 will get you a nice latte grande. -- Jeff Kinz, Emergent Research, Hudson, MA. Email may contain words incorrectly generated by Speech Recognition software.
