I missed the original message, so I'm not sure if this is relevant,
but it might at least be helpful to someone...

Also, for use on X systems, xterm has resources that can be used to
specify the RGB values of the 16 "vga" or "ANSI" colors (technically,
the ISO 6429 extension colors).  I set color7 (grey) to a darker grey
than the default, because the default color makes it hard to read the
menuconfig menus for configuring the kernel. I find that for any other
application, it doesn't make a noticable difference.  For the curious,
I use:

  XTerm.color7: #0A0A0A

You can change the color values for all 16 of the "ANSI" colors, by
setting the resource for XTerm.color<n> to whatever RGB value you
like.
