If you're running 2.2.16 you're probably also using a fairly old version of pcmcia too. You might want to have a look at this link: http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Linux.Wireless.drivers.html#Orinoco [Note particularly, section 3.2, The Driver.] In general, the 2.4 kernel has excellent support for laptops and PCMCIA cards. You might try updating to the latest. The VM is also much improved over the major complaints from earlier releases, though I do still get annoyed at having to swap in Mozilla after leaving it sitting for a few hours...
