Hello list, The situation described in my previous message (GNU tar having a bug with long file names and multi-volume archives) has spurred us to look into alternatives. We will be re-evaluating ext2dump, but tar has the distinct advantage of being fairly portable, so we are also looking at other tar implementations.
One that I have found is called "star". It comes from Joerg Schilling, author of the "cdrecord" program (among others). It claims to be faster and more compliant with POSIX than GNU tar. We will be doing our own tests, but I was wondering if anyone here has tried it already, and if so, what they thought of it. One thing that becomes apparent immediately is that Joerg Schilling appears to be waging his own personal war against the GNU project. Now, I can sympathize with many of his complaints about GNU, but immediately after condemning them, he turns around and does the same thing. Worst case of the pot calling the kettle black I've ever seen. Now, this does not necessarily mean he writes bad code, or he does not support his software, but I am not impressed. Anyone else have experience with "star" they can comment on? -- Ben Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do not | | necessarily represent the views or policy of any other person, entity or | | organization.
