Well, pop my corn.  That did it.  At least I got the kernel output
up to the 'Freeing unused kernel memory' message, and then nothing
(except the 'AT' probe from 'checking for new hardware') until
the login prompt.  But the kernel info is there, and the <Break>s
sync'd, so I am very, very happy.

What a thing to leave out of the Linux (or grub) documentation..
