Try checking the permissions on /dev/dsp.  It may be as simple as
not having write access to the special file.  Back when I used a
VooDoo3 card, the /dev/3dfx driver needed to have the permissions set
differently in order for non-root users to access it.  Sounds like
a similar problem.
