I wasn't aware of that.  However, doesn't that make you wonder why MS 
doesn't allow for the same thing?  Compressing the original .xls file 
with gzip yields a file size smaller than the gnumeric file.

So, the fact that the Open Source/Free software is smarter than the 
proprietary software in that it compresses it's data file in order to 
save space is even more reason to switch, isn't it?

Sure, you could realize the same benefits by compressing the native 
MS file formats, but without MS actually making that the default 
action, there's no way you'll get millions of users to consciously 
remember to compress their data, not to mention getting them to live 
with having to manually compress/de-compress the file each time they 
open or close the file!

IMO, that's just more reason to switch.
