You may want to look into:
- FAI http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/
- cfengine http://www.cfengine.org/
These tools may prove to more along the lines of what you're
ultimately trying to accomplish than creating a CD image.
Maybe not, but they're still quite interesting tools in and of
themselves, and all UNIX/Linux sysadmins should know about them :)
