FWIW, I've been running Debian for a couple of years
and running 2.4.18 since it became available, on a
number of different machines and with a number of
different Enet cards (including a 3c590, IIRC) and
can't recall having any problems. I've also never
heard that using an initrd is "preferred" w/Debian...
