Ive been quite the IRCer over the past six months.. first on OPN and now on a private
server.
Concerning clients:
I'm in love w/ BX. its like vi; the learning curve is steep but you'll really
start to like it after a bit.
lots of people like X-chat, which also runs on windows. mIRC, however, is
apprently 'the' windows client.
Servers:
the private server i frequent runs "version 2.8/hybrid-5.3p8". the op has yet
to have any troubles with it, in probably 6 months of use.. and it doesn't seem to
take many resources. he runs it on a p100/16 megs along w/ a bot or two.. and the load
averages dont get too high. ive never seen it above 0.30, and if it even gets close to
that, its surely the bot that uses all of it.
OPN apparently runs "dancer-ircd-10.0.31+maint8". OPN has a lot of issues.
Although I somehow doubt this is related to their choice of IRC servers, perhaps it
would be good to steer clear of dancer-ircd...
and finally... that private irc server is at irc.freebsdhackers.net. as you might tell
from the domain, the op is a BSD zealot, but i assure you he's benign. no head-biting
beration about your choice of OS from him, thankfully.
most (if not all) activity is in #freebsd, which bears little to no resemblance on the
usual choice of topics. i am frequently there under the nick 'fogalt'. feel free to
stop in and throw me a /msg ;p
