Mike, I think you'll have more luck taking this to another list. The sort of pkgconfig-cant-find-glib problem you describe is not unique to atk, it's just that when it occurs, ATK hits it first.
Have you checked your PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable? I believe that the gtk+/gnome builds no longer look in /usr/lib/pkgconfig by default, so this may be your problem.
