Hello,

Tablet pc users, kiosk mode users and disabled users with only the
pointer for input do need an onscreen keyboard at the login screen.
What about adding an item to the Options menu of the themed login
screen to start the simple onscreen keyboard. (For the plain login
screen, the alternative would be to add an Accessibility menu next to
the Session and Language menu.)

In any case, concerning the onscreen keyboard, this would be more
userfriendly than the gestures method. (Once systemwide dwelling
arrives to gnome, the accessibility menu/Options menu should also
open automatically by hovering with the pointer over it.)

I filed a Request For Enhancement bug against gdm with this request.
Here it is:

In Particular:

In Ubuntu Feisty, the simple onscreen keyboard called onboard does
run with a hack at the login screen. This shows at least that there
is some demand for it and I filed a similar rfe-bugs against gdm in
Ubuntu:

Best Regards.
