Hi Christian, There is a bug for keyboard navigation in notification area: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103223 Hope I can get some time to look into it.
After you open the volume control, you can adjust the volume by pressing "up" and "down", and Orca will read the value to you.
