Hi Ken and Matt,
Note that the info in that BBC link is rather old and misleading. Dasher is no eye gaze software. It's an excellent alternative text input tool that may be used with any pointing device, including eye gaze, and a range of other input methods.
The Inference group at Cambridge who are developing Dasher are also working on the Opengazer project - currently within the AEGIS project.
There are a number of other OS eye gaze projects. The most comprehensive list I know will be found at the COGAIN web site at

However you should be aware that none of these OS projects based on low cost cameras will so far and currently be likely to provide you with a tool that will be practically useful for the actual ALS or other user who needs an eye gaze system. There is quite some way to go before that happens.

Hey Matt,
Here is a link to a few that we've looked at but as of yet we haven't had to implement any of them.
Another program is called Dasher...It is open source but again, we haven't tried it yet.

I was wondering if there was a project for an eye tracking application for people who are immobile or have a disease such as ALS ("Lou Gehrig's Disease").
