I found what seems to be the secret in Andrew Burton's "Writing Gnome
Applets in Gnome2" tutorial at
http://www.gnome.org/projects/ORBit2/appletstutorial.html
following his notes, I first loaded the applet via a terminal e.g :-
gdb /usr/libexec/gweather-applet-2
run
then add the applet to the panel. The output then all goes to the
terminal, and backtrace can be obtained
