so I can just write a plain program which displays some text in the tray icon using baloon messages. I intend to write a tutorial on this cause as I said before, I couldn't find anything on this and I think it would be useful for other gtk+/gnome beginners.
I do not know whether a tutorial exists or not, but the following link http://standards.freedesktop.org/systemtray-spec/systemtray-spec-0.2.html would help you understand the specifications of system tray and balloon messages.
